Frugal Gardening Tip – Regrow Scallions

You know how sometimes a friend passes along a gardening tip and in your mind you know it should work but you’re inner skeptic rears its head? You ask other gardeners to see if this concept has worked for them and you check online for success stories there too. Even after all that you’re skeptical but willing to test their theory. That’s where I was when a friend passed along her frugal gardening tip of regrowing store-bought scallions.
I knew in mind that, logically, when you put an onion bulb in soil it grows. But to regrow store-bought scallions? Yes! Why hadn’t I tried this before?
Hannaford had scallions on sale for $ .49 a bunch in the past two weeks so I bought a bunch to cook with and to try to regrow. Whenever I chose a scallion or two to cook with, I cut the bulb off about an inch from the end and stuck it in a small pot I had filled with compost from our pile. (Remember roots down and cover the top with a bit of soil)
I kind of forgot about them until I looked out the kitchen window yesterday and thought I saw a bit of green poking through. This morning when I ventured out on the deck with my first cup of coffee this is what I saw. Four scallions about 1 inch tall and 2 others barely pushing through the top layer of soil.
It works! In about a week’s time I should be able to pull my first regrown scallion to add to my omelet for breakfast.
So there you have it. Spend $ .49 on a healthy bunch of store-bought scallions once and enjoy the greens over and over all summer long.
