O happy day! A Frugal Friend is alive and well! She has set up temporary residence here until blogger has unlocked her previous blogspot. Stop over and say hello. She sure would like to hear from her followers!

Thursday's Yucky Stuff Is Lucky Stuff

Okay. When you see that the bananas are looking like this you know nobody is going choose one to snack on. Yuck!

Let's have a go at the best banana muffin recipe ever. I've tried many different banana muffin recipes and hands down this is the best! Now you only need 3 bananas so if you have more than 3 like I do put the extras in a freezer bag in the freezer. Now I have enough for a second batch next week.
Let's start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and spraying your muffin pan with Pam.

Next peel and mash the 3 bananas in a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, 2 large eggs,

3/4 brown sugar,
and 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract and stir well.

In a sifter combine 2 cups unbleached white four ( if you want to bump up the nutrition substitute 1 cup of whole wheat for 1 cup of the white), 1 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Sift into the wet ingredients and stir until well mixed.

Fill your muffin cups 3/4 full. Bake in your preheated oven for 20 - 25 minutes. In my oven 25 minutes is perfect.

Remove and cool on a wire rack. These hold their shape so well. The house smells delicious! As you can count 2 have already been absconded with! In our house you have to be quick!

Spotted, soft bananas? Yuck! Warm fragrant delicious muffins? How lucky are we? :)

Trying It Tuesday, Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

What I want to know is WHERE has this recipe been all my married life? I don't know. I think it has probably been around forever and I was just never open to it. But when I saw Sharon post making your own detergent on her blog, Good True & Beautiful (which is absolutely lovely by the way), I HAD to try it. It spoke to the inner me that is looking for ways to stretch our budget in ways other than cutting coupons. (Gasp!) Here are the ingredients you will need to make your own detergent.
  • Arm & Hammer All Natural Super Washing Soda
  • Ivory Soap
  • Borax Laundry Booster
  • Water

Begin by grating the bar of ivory soap. Bud Boy #4 remembered this "job" from his days attending the local Montessori School. Just look at the concentration! You will end up with a bowl of shredded soap that looks like snow.

Add this to 4 cups of hot water in a pot on the stove. Melt the soap over medium - low heat. Stir often. It will look like this when completely melted.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket half way with hot tap water. Bud is in the construction trade so we just happen to have a FEW of these around.

To this hot water add the pot of melted soap and water from the stove.

Next add 1 cup of the Super Washing Soda ....................
and a 1/2 cup of the Borax Laundry Booster.

Stir well. Cover and let sit over night. When you check it in the morning you will find what I call gelatinous goo. Stir this well and fill a previously used, empty, cleaned out, laundry detergent bottle. (Whew! that was a mouthful!) Before each use you should shake the bottle well. Add a 1/2 cup to top loading machines and 1/4 to front loading machines.
I paid $3.79 for the Borax and $2.79 for the Washing Soda at Hannaford. The Ivory soap I picked up for $1.00 a 3-pack (with a coupon) at Rite Aid. It's a no brainer that this saves money! It works out to less than 4 cents a load! I can predict not having to buy supplies for another 6 months. Which will give me enough time to watch the prices of the Borax and Washing Soda and pick up the next supplies at their lowest prices. I have never seen coupons for these products only the Ivory soap. It cleans wicked good and the best part is there's no added dyes or perfumes. Try it. Seriously. Thank you Sharon for teaching this old dog a new trick!
