Two years ago this Columbus Day weekend my son and his then fiance, Ariel, were wed on the island of Vinalhaven off the coast of Maine. It was a glorious day. The sun was shining, it was warm and Autumn was all around us.
Ariel has added so much to our family, and to my recipe collection, ever since she became a Hewson. This week's recipe was on the menu at their reception and was created by her father. She tells me that whenever her family got together for Thanksgiving everyone contributed a family recipe to make and share. He didn't have one so he made one! It is legend now. (Now there's a man with initiative!) He seems to guard the recipe pretty tight so here is my version of his notorious "Crapple".
Crapple
Ingredients:
1 (12 oz.) pkg. cranberries, rinsed and stemmed
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup sugar
6 pared, seeded, and sliced Delicious apples.
In a saucepan put 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Bring to a boil and add cranberries. Cook until berries are tender.
In a separate saucepan place the apples and 1/2 cup water. Cook until apples are done. Mash with a potato masher and stir into cranberry sauce. Refrigerate.
It couldn't be more simpler but oh so good! I like the story behind it as well. Sometimes I add cinnamon at this is fragrant and delicious too.
Blessings,
Teresa
