Shopping Trip to Rite Aid Today

So I'm learning the ropes along with the rest of you when it comes to shopping the sales at Rite Aid. This is how my trip played out today:

• 1 2pk. GE soft white light bulbs $2.00

• 2 10pks. Bic Cristal pens .50 each

Out of pocket I paid $7.09.

I applied online for $28.75 in August Single Check Rebates and mailed away for $4.99 Zantac rebate here. I made $26.65 profit! When the money from these rebates come in I'll put the money in my Rite Aid folder to purchase more "free" items for my family.

I've learned that I only pay $35.00 - $50.00 a week in groceries (with coupons & sales) because I get the shampoos, soaps toothpastes etc. free at Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens.

Smoking Sale at Wiscasset Shaw's!

While shopping at Shaw's in Wiscasset I found a large display box containing boxes of Wild Harvest organic mini vanilla wafer 6 packs. for .50 a box! The manager tells me there was a key punch error and they received 80 cases. So they had to lower the price dramatically for quick sale. The expiration date is Oct. 11, 2009. What great lunch box fillers these would make!
These are normally priced at $3.99 a box.

Rite Aid has Sharpie Accent Highlighters, Assorted Types 2-4 pack, on sale through Saturday 8/8. It is a buy 1 get 1 FREE sale. They are priced at $3.49 each. Go here and click on "Download money saving coupons". The coupon is on page 3. After 2 coupons, $1.49/2 or .75 each.

8/6 I bought mine free at CVS but note that the shelf price still said $3.49. The cashier checked the price for me to be sure they rang up at the sale price of .99.

Obscure Coupon!

If you shop at Shaw's you can print a coupon here for $1.00 off Golds Horseradish. You can find these bottles over the meat cases. I found mine priced at $2.29. I'm a HUGE fan of horse radish and I've never seen a coupon for it so I'd thought I'd share this with you. I bought a second bottle on a separate trip because I make this recipe every year. One batch lasts all year and it's sooo good with beef and ham.

2lbs. cooked whole beets shredded, I use a box shredder
4 Tablespoons prepared ground horse radish ( I use the whole bottle but it's too strong for most people.)

Combine and store in a glass jars in the refrigerator. I prefer the old fashion canning jars with the rubber rings. Horseradish and metal lids do not mix.

Monday Making Memories#2 Flashlight Walk

Every Monday I'll share activities that my friends, sisters and I do with our children that are kind to our budget and foster good times, great memories and family togetherness.

Every month or so our family goes for a flashlight walk together. These are exciting for children. Their familiar yard, road, and neighborhood look entirely different at night. The smells, sounds and sights are different too.

It's a little scary, a bit exciting and you have to be a bit brave too. To be out when the majority of the world is in is a pretty cool experience.

We all carry flashlights. I prefer the hand held variety whereas my husband and boys prefer the headband type. (I'm just a bit too self conscience to where those!) Once we even taped a flashlight to the top of their remote control cars!

We decide before heading out which direction and how far we are going to walk, and then we're off. A funny thing we realized is that the same distance in the day time feels longer at night. Weird huh?

Can you tell who's dog is barking? Who's eyes are up in that tree? Can you smell the ocean? Check out the night sky. Can you see the stars? Who can find the North Star? Where's the Big Dipper?

The boys always go to bed happy after our flashlight walks. "When can we do that again?" they ask. In the morning they bring up in conversation the things we heard and saw.

To quote my husband "I like holding my wife's hand and hearing the children happy." THAT'S a great reason to venture out into the night with your family. The fresh night air and exercise is an added bonus.

Around The "Honey Moon Table" #2

The Sunday, Around the "Honey Moon" Table, recipe is for Turkey Sloppy Joes. This is my son, Seth's, favorite hot sandwich recipe. The second in a series of 4 hot sandwich recipes I will share with your family. I found this recipe 2 years ago in the September 2007 issue of Everyday Food. The recipe calls for 3/4 lb. ground turkey. I use a 1 lb. package and make sure you have 4 LARGE carrots or the equivalent there of. (Don't skimp on the carrots!)

Tip: I find Butterball ground turkey on sale at the Lincoln Country Store, a Surefine store, for $1.50 a package. When I buy Goya canned beans on sale I look for the can with the airplane on the front. On the inside label are 2 coupons. One is for .55 off any Butterball product. I can pick up the ground turkey for .95! This is a really inexpensive and very healthy dinner for 6.

Possible Hidden Money Maker at CVS 8/2

There may be a hidden money maker at CVS this Sunday only. Money Saving Madness has a posting here on how to get Schick ST2 Twin packs for free. I looked through my coupons and found a coupon in the 6/21 Smart Source insert that says "SAVE $2.00 On Any (one) Schick Disposable Razor Package". If you pick these packs up for $1.00 in the travel section you should be able to make a$1.00 profit on each package. NOTE: Sunday will be the last day to use this coupon as they expire 8/02/2009!

Uncle Ben's Money Maker!

While shopping today I found Uncle Ben's Ready Rice packages with ".75 off now" coupons attached to them. Uncle Ben's was on sale for $1.99. I used my TRY ME FREE! coupons from the 6/28 Red Plum insert and then I checked my receipt. YES!, Shaw's doubled the .75 coupon on each! I picked up 4 packs, so personally I made $6.00 which covered the price of my produce today!

Neat Find at Shaw's

The Shaw's in Augusta had Musselman's Healthy Picks and Total Fruit 4pks. on sale 3/$5.00. Remember when I told you Parents magazine had .50/1 coupon in its July issue here ? Well Shaw's doubled it so they were only .67 a 4pk! It gets better. Look for the packages that are marked as having a $1.00 coupon inside! I opened mine when I got home and it's a $1.00/2 coupon towards your next purchase. These make healthy lunch box fillers.

Banner Shopping Trip at Shaw's!

I had a banner shopping trip today at Shaw's. I won't go into the details other than to say I was able to save $159.83 and I left with my $20.00 in Catalina coupons. I payed $111.73 for 2 weeks worth of groceries. I went over my $50.00 a week budget by $11.73 but we splurged and bought 3 squirt guns and water balloons for the boys that were 50% off ( It's so hot here today!) and 43 loaves of 100% whole grain bread that the store had over ordered in error, the shelf date was "sell by 8/3". We were able to pick it up for .25 a loaf. No, I didn't keep it all! We filled our freezer and our bread box, then gave some to my son & his wife to fill their freezer. The last of it we sent over to camp for those visiting out laws.
